Frequently asked questions
Everything worth knowing about how we print, personalise, ship and handle your orders.
Makolate basics
What is Makolate?
Makolate makes personalised, 3D-printed objects for your brand — keychains, coasters, placecards, table numbers, pizza markers and more. You design them in your browser, we print them on demand and ship them to you.
What's the idea behind Makolate?
Makolate is built as an ecosystem for everyone who wants to put their brand first. We design objects for specific verticals — restaurants, offices, events — and we keep adding more. The goal is simple: make it effortless to bring your brand into the real world.
Who is it for?
From restaurants and cafés to offices, events and creators — anyone who wants branded objects without minimum orders or a warehouse to manage.
Is there a minimum order?
No minimums. Order a single piece or a few hundred — you choose the quantity and we print exactly what you need.
How it's made
How are Makolate products made?
Every product is 3D-printed in-house, to order. Nothing sits in a warehouse: we print your design after you place the order, then ship it.
Is 3D printing actually good enough?
There's definitely a trade-off to 3D printing compared with industrial injection moulding. What it gives you in return is customisation mass production simply can't offer — your logo, your text, your colours on every single piece, with no tooling and no minimums. Thanks to recent advances in printers and multi-material printing, and our 10+ years of experience with the technology, we deliver durable, good-looking products with short lead times. We've learned the details that make production reliable.
Are the products durable?
Yes. Our main material, PETG, is solid, stands up to everyday use and tolerates heat up to around 70 °C. Because printing is additive and partly handmade, you may notice faint layer lines at certain angles or tiny dimensional variations (within ±0.3 mm) — that's normal, not a defect.
What does “printed on demand” mean for me?
It means less waste and no overstock, and that we can personalise every order. It also means a short production window — see Shipping for current lead times.
Materials
What materials do you print in?
Two, chosen for real-world use: PETG, a rigid, solid and durable material, and TPU, a flexible, rubber-like one. We don't use PLA — PETG is harder to print but far more robust, and for products meant to last we think that trade-off is worth it.
Rigid or flexible — which should I choose?
On products offered in both materials — like the Branded Coaster — the configurator's Rigid / Flexible switch picks the material for you. Rigid (PETG) is the default: solid, durable and great at holding detail. Flexible (TPU) bends and compresses without breaking — ideal for grips, bumpers and anything that needs to flex. Other products are made in their default material.
How do the colour combinations work?
Colour combos are tied to the material. Rigid combos are printed in PETG and flexible combos in TPU — so when you pick a combo you're also choosing the material it's made in.
Personalisation & the configurator
How do I personalise a product?
Right in your browser. Open any configurable product and the 3D configurator lets you add your branding and see a live preview from every angle — what you see is what we print.
What can I put on my product?
Your logo (upload JPG, PNG or SVG), custom text, or a QR code. Choose how it sits on the surface — embossed (raised), engraved (recessed) or flush — pick the font, and set the colours for each part.
What's the difference between embossed, engraved and flush?
They're the three ways your branding sits on the surface. Embossed raises the logo or text above the surface; engraved cuts it into the material; flush keeps it level with the surface, standing out by colour rather than depth. You can see the effect live in the configurator's 3D preview.
Do I need an account to design?
No. You can configure and preview freely without signing in. An account only lets you save your designs and manage orders — and is required just for reconfigurable QR codes.
What if I want something the configurator can't do?
Get in touch. If you need a shape, size or finish beyond what the configurator offers, we'll work out a custom solution with you.
Contact usReconfigurable QR codes
What is a reconfigurable QR code?
A normal printed QR code is fixed forever — the only way to change where it points is to reprint it. A reconfigurable (dynamic) QR code from Makolate lets you change its destination whenever you like — a new campaign, menu or address — without reprinting anything.
How much does it cost?
A one-time €5 service fee per QR code — not per item. Order 20 placecards with the same code and it's still €5. You'll need a free Makolate account to manage the destination.
Account & saved designs
Do I need an account to order?
You can browse, design and check out without one. An account just makes life easier: it saves your designs, keeps your order history, and is needed to manage reconfigurable QR codes.
What does saving a design do?
It stores your exact configuration so you can reopen, tweak or reorder it later — no need to rebuild it from scratch.
How do I track my orders?
Sign in to see your order history and status. You'll also get email updates, including a tracking link once your parcel ships.
Shipping & delivery
How long until I receive my order?
Because everything is made to order, allow 3–5 working days for production, plus carrier transit time for your zone (below).
What are the rates and delivery times?
Italy: €5, free over €50, 1–2 working days. European Union: €12, 3–5 working days. United Kingdom & Switzerland: €18, 4–7 working days. (Transit is in addition to production time.)
Do you ship internationally? What about customs?
Yes. We ship across the EU with our carriers and worldwide via DHL Express. For the UK and Switzerland (outside the EU) import duties and VAT may apply on delivery, paid by the recipient. Need another country or a volume/B2B order? Get in touch.
Get in touchHow do I track my order?
You'll get a tracking number by email as soon as your parcel is handed to the carrier, so you can follow it to your door.
Returns & refunds
Can I return a personalised product?
Because every product is made to your specifications, the 14-day right of withdrawal doesn't apply — once an order is confirmed it can't be cancelled on change-of-mind grounds. You're still fully covered, though, if something goes wrong — see below.
Read the returns policyWhat if my order arrives damaged or wrong?
We'll make it right. If your parcel is damaged in transit, you receive the wrong item, or there's a defect (covered by the 24-month statutory warranty), email [email protected] with your order number, a description and photos within 14 days of delivery. We reply within 2 working days and offer a free replacement, repair or full refund.

Is print-on-demand better for the environment?
It helps. Making each item only after it's ordered means no overstock and far less waste than mass production — we don't print things that would never sell. And we print only what you need, in the quantity you choose.
Are your materials recyclable?
Our main material, PETG, belongs to the recyclable PET family (the same as drink bottles). We keep evaluating lower-impact materials and processes as the technology matures.
